Washington says the new operation is aimed at weakening Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz

The United States has launched a new round of military strikes against Iran, further escalating the confrontation over the security of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command confirmed the beginning of the latest operation, saying the strikes were ordered by President Donald Trump and were intended to reduce Iran’s ability to disrupt or attack merchant vessels using the strategic waterway.

Explosions reported in southern Iran

Iranian state television reported further explosions on Qeshm Island and in the southern coastal area of Jask.

The precise targets and the full extent of the damage were not immediately known. There was also no immediate independent confirmation of casualties.

Qeshm Island lies inside the Strait of Hormuz, close to some of the world’s most important maritime energy routes. Its location gives it major strategic importance in any confrontation involving shipping in the Persian Gulf.

Jask is also positioned along Iran’s southern coastline, near the eastern approaches to the strait.

CENTCOM confirms the new operation

US Central Command said the latest strikes were aimed at holding Iranian forces accountable and limiting Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial vessels.

According to the American military, the operation is focused on degrading Iranian capabilities linked to attacks or interference against international shipping.

The targets are believed to include coastal military infrastructure, missile systems, surveillance facilities and naval assets, although a full list of the sites struck has not yet been released.

Strait of Hormuz at the centre of the conflict

The Strait of Hormuz remains the main flashpoint in the confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

The narrow waterway is one of the most important shipping routes in the world and is essential for the movement of oil and gas from the Persian Gulf to international markets.

Any prolonged disruption could reduce tanker traffic, raise insurance costs and place new pressure on global energy prices.

Commercial vessels operating in the area also face the risk of missile attacks, drone strikes, seizures and sudden restrictions imposed by military forces.

Fears of a wider regional escalation

The latest American operation raises the risk of a broader conflict involving other Gulf countries and international shipping routes.

Iran could respond with further missile or drone attacks against US military installations, allied bases or commercial vessels linked to countries supporting Washington.

The situation is especially dangerous because military facilities, ports and energy infrastructure are located close to densely used civilian shipping lanes.

Diplomatic efforts under pressure

The renewed exchange of strikes has weakened hopes for a rapid return to negotiations.

Regional governments continue to call for restraint, but the latest attacks make an immediate de-escalation increasingly difficult.

The coming hours will be crucial in determining whether Iran launches a direct response and whether the United States expands its military campaign.

Global markets watching closely

The conflict is also being closely monitored by financial markets.

A sustained disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could push oil prices higher, increase transport costs and revive inflationary pressures in several economies.

Energy companies may benefit from rising prices, while airlines, shipping groups and other fuel-dependent businesses could face higher costs.

A dangerous new phase

The explosions on Qeshm Island and in Jask indicate that the confrontation is moving closer to the infrastructure controlling access to the Strait of Hormuz.

The crisis is no longer limited to a direct military exchange between the United States and Iran.

A further escalation could threaten regional stability, international trade and global energy supplies.
