AUSTRALIA v PARAGUAY, THE PREDICTION: A TENSE CONTEST, BUT THE SOCCEROOS ADVANCE
by Emanuele Esposito
My prediction as a FUN is Australia 1-1 Paraguay, a result that would allow the Socceroos to finish second in Group D and qualify directly for the Round of 32.
I expect a match that will be more tactical than spectacular. Australia have two results available to them, while Paraguay must win to move above the Socceroos in the standings.
At the same time, Paraguay may also be careful not to damage their chances of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams. That balance could produce a cautious first half, with few clear opportunities and both sides focused primarily on defensive organisation.
Tony Popovic has made six changes from the defeat against the United States, bringing Jackson Irvine, Connor Metcalfe, Nestory Irankunda and Cristian Volpato into the starting side.
It is a more dynamic and technically adventurous line-up, although also a less familiar one, particularly with young Lucas Herrington involved in defence.
Paraguay are expected to use a compact 5-3-2 formation and will be without the suspended Miguel Almirón, their most dangerous player on the counterattack.
WHERE AUSTRALIA CAN WIN THE MATCH
Nestory Irankunda could be the key player.
His pace can trouble a Paraguay defence that is strong in numbers but not always comfortable when forced to run back towards its own goal.
Volpato will need to find space between midfield and attack, while Metcalfe could exploit the gaps left when Paraguay are eventually forced to push forward.
Australia must avoid playing only for the draw.
Dropping too deep would invite Paraguay to attack with crosses, second balls and physical duels around the penalty area.
Harry Souttar and Alessandro Circati are strong in the air, but defending under pressure for the entire match would be a dangerous strategy.
The decisive period may come in the final 30 minutes.
If the score remains level, Paraguay will have to take more risks, opening spaces for Australia to counterattack.
THE MAIN DANGER
Paraguay will try to turn the match into a physical, fragmented and tense contest.
They will look to slow the tempo when necessary, dominate midfield duels and make the most of set pieces.
Australia must remain disciplined.
The greatest danger would be conceding the opening goal, because Paraguay could then defend with five players at the back and make the game extremely difficult.
The Socceroos therefore need to start with much greater intensity than they showed against the United States, when they paid the price for a passive first half.
Irankunda, Metcalfe and Volpato helped change the tempo after the break in that match, and they are starting today precisely to avoid another slow opening.
FINAL PREDICTION
Correct score: Australia 1-1 Paraguay
Half-time score: 0-0
Key player: Nestory Irankunda
Possible Australian goalscorer: Connor Metcalfe
Team qualifying in second place: Australia
I can see Paraguay creating the most dangerous moment of the match or even taking the lead, but Australia have more attacking energy and enough character to respond.
The heart says a Socceroos victory.
The analysis points towards a hard-fought draw.
Australia 1-1 Paraguay, with the Socceroos advancing to the Round of 32. Go Australia!
