At least six people have been killed and 22 others injured after an explosive device detonated inside a crowded café in central Damascus, Syrian health authorities said.

The explosion occurred on Thursday, July 2, inside a café near the Palace of Justice, in one of the busiest areas of the Syrian capital. The venue is located on Al-Nasr Street, along the route leading towards the historic Hamidiyeh market.

Initial reports from Syrian state media had put the toll at five dead and 16 wounded. The number was subsequently revised upwards by the Syrian Health Ministry to at least six fatalities and 22 people injured. Some of the wounded were reportedly taken to hospital in serious condition.

Explosive device planted inside the café

According to Syrian state television, the explosion was caused by a bomb deliberately placed inside the café. Damascus Governor Maher Idlibi described the device as relatively primitive and said the Interior Ministry would release the preliminary findings of its investigation.

Emergency crews and ambulances rushed to the scene, while security forces sealed off the surrounding streets and established a security cordon around the building.

Images circulating after the explosion showed wounded people lying on the ground as police officers and emergency personnel provided assistance. The most seriously injured were transported to nearby hospitals.

No organisation has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, and the identity and motive of those behind the bombing remain unknown.

Investigation under way

Syrian security services are examining the remains of the explosive device and reviewing evidence from the area in an attempt to identify whoever planted the bomb.

Authorities have not confirmed reports about how the device was brought into the venue or whether the Palace of Justice itself was the intended target.

Governor Idlibi pledged that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice. The Interior Ministry is expected to provide further details once the initial investigation has been completed.

New security concerns in the capital

The bombing has renewed concerns over security in Damascus following a series of sporadic attacks since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in late 2024.

On May 19, 2026, a car bomb exploded outside a building connected to the Syrian Defence Ministry in Damascus, killing one soldier and injuring at least 18 other people.

Thursday’s attack occurred in a heavily frequented part of the capital and appears to have deliberately targeted civilians gathered inside the café.

The death toll remains provisional and could rise further as investigations continue and hospitals provide updates on the condition of the wounded.
